At Key Essentials to Behavior Management, we offer a wide range of consultation and training services within the ABA Therapy space including Functional Behavior Assessment Training, also know as FBA.

What is a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA)?

A Functional Behavior Assessment is the process that is used to identify a specific or unique behavior that is interfering with a student’s education. With a Functional Behavior Assessment, we are able to identify the specific unique behavior, determine why this behavior is supported by the student and ultimately craft a plan to improve this behavior for the student.

Steps of a Functional Behavior Assessment

When starting a Functional Behavior Assessment, it is important to follow the guided steps to both define the specific behavior and also to help assist the student. Below are the steps taken during an FBA:

1.       Define the behavior – During the first step it is important to define the specific behavior that is interfering with a student’s education.

2.       Gather information on the student – Once a specific behavior is defined, it is important to gather information on the student to better help understand why this behavior is occurring. This can include speaking with the student’s teachers/parents, reviewing school records to determine if this behavior existed before and more.

3.       Find the reason behind the behavior – Once all of the information is gathered on the student, it is important to find the reason for this behavior. During this step it is the team’s responsibility to figure out why the student has this behavior or what in the student’s life is causing this behavior.

4.       Create a plan – In the 4th step, the team already has defined the student’s behavior and have concluded as to why the student has this behavior. From here, the team will put together a plan that is designed to help resolve the behavior that is interfering with a student’s education. Once the plan is crafted and implemented it is important for the team to observe the plan in place to determine if further changes to the plan are needed.
